CPA firm moves into coworking space with eye on expanding in Albany

A Hudson, New York CPA firm has joined the Beahive co-working space in Albany as it looks to expand in the region.

Matt VanDerbeck, a firm shareholder at Pattison, Koskey, Howe & Bucci CPAs, said he has started working out of Beahive at least once a week to grow business contacts in the area.

“Our firm has been thinking about a form of expansion into Albany. We have clients in Albany but presently we don’t have a physical office location,” VanDerbeck said. “We have to typically find somewhere to meet them for the clients we do have in Albany.”

VanDerbeck has experience working in Albany. He has a degree in accounting from the College of Saint Rose and a masters from Bentley College outside of Boston. He spent 10 years working at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Albany.

PKHB wasn’t at the point yet to rent something large, VanDerbeck said. After joining the Center for Economic Growth, he connected with Tracy Metzger of TL Metzger & Associates, who manages the space in Albany.

He plans to use his time at the Beahive to see if there’s opportunity to grow, or acquire smaller firms from retiring CPAs, in Albany.

“With the convention center and the growing nanotech industry there’s just so much going on,” VanDerbeck said. “There seems to be an opportunity to be more present and invest time more in the community. You have to be present to be more involved, so people get the chance to know our firm better.”

PKHB offers accounting, audit, tax preparation, business advisory and tax planning to businesses, nonprofits and governments.

The firm is No. 13 on the Business Review’s List of CPA Firms with 11 CPAs in the Capital Region and 46 total employees. The firm is also No. 1 on the Tax Preparers List, completing 5,494 returns in 2015.

PKHB has offices in Hudson, Valatie, Catskill, Saugerties and now Kingston.
